Science and Technology Go Hand in Hand

When most people think of the word “science,” their mind pictures space, nature, and physics. Science has historically been linked to the study of nature and other things of that nature. However, science is actually a system of obtaining knowledge. Through observations and experiments, scientist are able to better understand our world and how different things work. This definition allows almost anything to be considered science, from engineering and physics to photography and music. These areas of “science,” while associated with science, are most commonly associated to their respective fields.

On the other hand, many people associate science with science and technology. Technology and science have been linked ever since the development of technology became a large part of society. Science and technology are often mentioned together in the same sentence due to their association: much of technology would never have been invented if it weren’t for the scientific research and experiments used in development of said technology. As such, technology and science are bound by their definitions, as well as the nature of their being. However, while technology can not exist without science, science can still exist without technology. One can confidently say that this particular type of science would not be very interesting to the general public.

There are many different fields of study associated with science and technology. Ranging from the Apple’s new product, the iPad, to science news related to nuclear energy, the many different subjects related to both technology and science are overwhelming. Here are some of the recently popular fields of study associated with technology and science:

1. Biotechnology

The biotechnology revolution has begun and is in full swing. Biotechnology allows scientists to create new crops that are resistant to pests and viruses. It also helps scientists identify bacteria or viruses that may cause disease and increase knowledge on the subject of chemical reactions and modern genetic engineering techniques.

2. Electronics

Electronic technology and science have always gone hand in hand. Today, children in middle school carry smart phones and personal music devices that cost hundreds of dollars. Electronics have become an integral part of society so much so that if they were somehow removed, the younger generation would feel as if they had a huge hole in their life. It is this dependency on technology and the strive for greater technologies that drive scientists and researchers to find new technologies to present.

3. Energy and Power

With growing concerns about our country’s dependency on oil, scientists and researchers have spent millions seeking new, renewable energies that can be applied on a massive scale. Technology and science have developed new ways to power homes and automobiles alike, including solar and nuclear power.

5. Space

Most humans still remain curious about space, as it offers an infinite area to explore and infinite amount of information to learn. NASA and other corporations work together to create satellites and drones that explore space and transmit information back to Earth.
